Options in Sedation Dentistry
The best part about sedation dentistry is that you can choose the specific method that you are comfortable with. We offer multiple levels of sedation dentistry, depending on the patient’s unique needs and preferences. We never want you to be nervous about receiving sedation, as we are licensed by The American Dental Association and we are respectful and professional at all times.
There are three sedative states at that may be administered during your dental treatments: mild sedation, moderate sedation, and deep sedation.
Mild Sedation — Oral conscious sedation and nitrous oxide (laughing gas) are considered options in mild sedation. These are often used for patients with mild to moderate anxiety, longer procedures, or more complex situations. Mild sedation can be administered by taking a pill a few hours before your appointment (oral conscious sedation) or inhaling a colorless gas through a nosepiece (nitrous oxide). Patients remain awake and conscious throughout the entire procedure, but in a state of complete relaxation. Many patients prefer nitrous oxide inhalation because it wears off very quickly and they can drive themselves home. Nitrous oxide is commonly used for pediatric dental procedures.
Moderate Sedation — For patients with moderate dental anxiety and for those who need longer or more complex procedures, conscious sedation may be recommended. This typically requires the use of light IV sedation, but you will still remain awake during the procedure. It is recommended that patients who receive conscious sedation have someone accompany them to their appointment and drive them home, as it can take several hours for this sedative to wear off.
Deep Sedation — Deep sedation is reserved for patients who have moderate to severe dental anxiety. Patients receiving deep sedation go between consciousness and unconsciousness during their procedure and typically have no memory of the treatment performed. Deep sedation takes several hours to lose effect, so patients should avoid driving.
